Going South: Mallory on Holiday

Plans for a beach getaway by Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory led to some confusion this week over the last-minute cancellation of a neighborhood forum that he had scheduled in May.

A TV news show Thursday afternoon reported the forum as an upcoming event that evening. Mallory’s spokesman quickly issued an oddly worded press release informing media that the event, in fact, was canceled.

“The cancellation has been previously announced, but not necessarily widely announced,” said the statement by Jason Barron, Mallory’s communications director.

That’s because the announcement was made Tuesday during Mallory’s weekly press briefing, which has been sparsely attended in recent weeks. The City Hall session mostly involves Mallory listing what appointments he had in the previous week, and TV news crews, as well as some print reporters, have stopped regularly attending.

Just why the neighborhood forum on housing issues was canceled, however, remained a mystery for a short time. Later Thursday, CityBeat was contacted by two Cincinnatians who were on the same airline flight to Fort Lauderdale as Mallory and a friend. Amused by inadvertently traveling with the mayor, they snapped photographs of him in the Fort Lauderdale airport, using their cell phone’s camera. Barron later confirmed the forum was canceled because of conflicting vacation plans.

“The mayor took some time off, but I don’t know where he went,” Barron said. “He hasn’t taken anytime off in about a year because of the campaign and everything.”

Mallory’s office contacted housing agencies and told them the forum had been canceled, Barron said. But some residents didn’t know and showed up at Memorial Hall in Over-the-Rhine. Barron and another staffer were present to tell them about the cancellation and take some input on housing issues.

Barron said Mallory’s cancellation isn’t newsworthy.

“I really would hope the mayor wouldn’t be blamed for going on vacation,” he said.

Some residents, though, noted the forum had been planned at least four weeks earlier. Mallory should have either scheduled his flight for another day or provided earlier notice of the cancellation, they said.

Located about 45 minutes north of Miami, Fort Lauderdale is perhaps best known as the locale for the 1960 cult classic film, Where the Boys Are, based on the popular Connie Francis song.

  • Who's the friend? What's the Mayor doing on vacation with this guy when he was scheduled to talk on housing issues in Cincinnati? Talk about a mess....

  • I think that if I had written this, I would get abused about it for weeks.

    But an interesting piece, nonetheless!

  • I saw the news announcing the community forum as late as Thursday morning. That's pretty disrespectful of the citizens!

  • Looks like Kevin is trying to "out" the Mayor. I didn't think people on the same team did this to each other. What's wrong Kevin, jealous it wasn't you traveling to Florida?

  • Nice that the mayor is jetting off on vacation while everyday citizens are taking time off from their jobs to meet with him about important issues. Rarely do people travel like this last minute (especially if they have important job commitments), so he obviously knew before Tuesday that this event would be cancelled. This type of behavior shows very little respect or concern for the time or opinion of the people who he is supposed to be working for - the citizens of Cincinnati. What a pompous jerk.

  • The only pop-culture reference I associate with Fort Lauderdale is Flight of the Navigator.

So what's really the point of the final graf, Kevin?

  • He hasn't take time off in over a year because of campaigning & things?

What a self-centered oaf! Nothing has moved since he took office. Murders are increasing, along with the crime.

There are people living in this city who have never had "time off". They can barely pay the rent, buy groceries & keep cool.

This showboat clown has been in office 7 months now & we have absolutely nothing to show for it in performance & improvement. And to disrespect those affiliated with the housing issues forum is the height of ill manners.

No wonder the media decided to write off his press briefings. It's a waste of time, as nothing is moving ahead.

Give this Mallory another couple of months & if he doesn't start fast tracking his fast campaign rhetoric, then we need to put him on the fast track out of City Hall. Call in his term & boot him out.

  • Kevin, The mayor getting caught playing hooky is one thing and that's newsworthy. The gay-baiting isn't.

I hope you have a follow-up story that makes the gay peek-a-boo angle relevent. Otherwise you've fallen a few rungs, at least in my estimation.

  • Most weekends he seems unavailable for comment. My guess is he takes a lot of trips, and his office just lied to the press.

  • Anon 10:33, just out of curiousity, I'd like to know who the guy is. Funny, I read on another blog that Mark likes light-skinned or white guys, perhaps that is the case...

  • The Mayor and his staff were busy writing Dale's crybaby story for the Saturday Enquirer.
Can you believe Dale's load of crap?
Dale sells out his neighbors, gets impeached, sues everyone, loses the lawsuits, appoints hitman howdie, steals WECC bank accounts, gets fired from the EZ, and Dale gets hurt feelings because people say bad things about him.
Dale.....try getting a real job and stop stealing taxpayer money!

  • I agree. Given Kevin's own, shall we say, disposition, his thinly-veiled references to the Mayor's personal life are truly diminishing of Kevin's journalistic abilities, and Greg Flannery's professions to "acceptance."

  • Wonder who is paying for this little trip, the City of Cincinnati or his campaign fund....

Mallory seems to push the envelope any chance he gets.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:04 AM

  • I know that he has taken time off within the last year because he went on vacation the first weekend after he was sworn in. I remember thinking it was a bad sign that the mayor's second day in office he left for vacation. I guess I was right. Too bad his office feels the need to lie about it.

  • Next folks will be saying Slim is like the Music Man.
Remember how that all turned our okay in the end?
    In the end... heh heh

  • I will never vote for Mark Mallory again. I can't believe he went on vacation without telling me. This is much more important than any so called "issue" facing the city. I am beside myself with flabbergastation.

By Blogger WestEnder, at 3:46 PM

  • Westender, the point is not that Mallory is on vacation. The point is that he had scheduled a community forum and then cancelled it at the last minute with very little publicity. He should have more respect for other's people's time.

    Concerning Fort Lauderdale:

Fort Lauderdale (especially our little city within a city, Wilton Manors) is indeed famous as a Gay Resort. Which doesn't mean if you're Not Gay, and Never Wish to Become Gay, that you shouldn't visit here anyway.

Why: we have the best beaches, wonderful restaurants, great shopping, a Performing Arts Center that certainly rivals the Aronoff Center......but most of all: The Best Beaches...and it breaks my heart when I hear about all the Buckeyes who for some reason or other choose to travel to Destin,FL, or Daytona Beach, or Myrtle Beach, SC.

But certainly, if you are gay, and especially if you are male and gay, then you already know all about Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors.

Now if I happen to see Mayor Mallory this weekend, I will definitely snap him with my Cellphone Camera and send you the pix!

There are many reasons why Mayor Mallory might be coming here, aside from Wilton Manors: we're close to South Beach, in neighboring Miami -just a half day's drive from Key West and we also have one the US's biggest ports - Port Everglades.

So maybe Mayor Mark was coming to Fort Lauderdale to go on a 3-day, 4-day, 7-day or longer cruise.

Or maybe he was coming to visit friends in Wilton Manors. Not only is the mayor Gay, the former mayor is Gay....just about everyone, in fact, is Gay. There is a gay man, Ken Keechl, who is running for County Commissioner, and he openly acknowledges his partner of nine years, a realtor.

As for Wilton Manors - in case you're Not Gay and don't already know this, in one upscale shopping center there is a famous bar - Georgie's Alibi, nice shops including Gay Mart, Try My Thai, Java Boys Coffee, Tops and Bottoms (clothing store), Side Pocket Billiards, a realtor, an optician, and more. Nearby you'll find Hamburger Mary's, and many trendy bars and restaurants.

There's also a Skyline Chili conveniently located on nearby Federal Highway.

For people who are Not Gay, and who Never Ever Wish to be Gay, we have the Florida Marlins and the Miami Dolphins. We also have gorgeous beachfront hotels hosting Wet T-shirt Contests and reasonable Happy Hours. There are outdoorsy activities like drift fishing, scuba diving, lots (and I mean lots) of Golf --all now on summer discount.

For the certifiably Religious and Utterly Disaproving of Gay, there are three Big Box Churches to choose from, and many small ones. The biggest one is Calvary Chapel - as big as a small college; Coral Ridge Presbyterian -- where Senate Candidate Katherine Harris gave a fundraising speech, and First Baptist Church, where several prominent Miami Dolphins attend.

There are many reasons why Mayor Mallory may have chosen to skip some tiresome housing event or whatever, to come to Fort Lauderdale on vacation.

You should tell Jim Tarbell that it is Fort Lauderdale, and not Nancy, France, which should be Cincy's Sister City -- (cheaper round-trip airfare just one of them).

Like Cincy, we've just chosen a new County Manager (after almost a year of an interim manager)- we chose someone with 27 years' experience at a salary of $232,000 - she will manage a $3 billion budget and about 6,000 employees). We've just approved slots for local racetracks, we're struggling with crime, with affordable housing, with issues like raising the sales tax. But not for a new jail - we have a high-rise jail on our riverfront....our penny tax increase is for transportation.

So please visit us soon - and tell all of your friends!

  • Uh oh. If the CCV gets a hold of this tidbit, look for the "No Gay Mayors" ammendment in November.

  • Let me get this straight. Council began its SUMMER BREAK on Wednesday and the Mayor takes a "vacation" during a holiday weekend? What's the problem? Get a clue people...SUMMER BREAK. Council and the Mayor are on a BREAK. How many of you took Monday off or skated through the day and really didn't do any work? Kevin, where are the Council members? Surely, you don't think they are working. You're so tight with Ghiz, I'm sure she told you where her trailor was going to be parked this weekend. Have your "sources" tracked the others down with their handy dandy cell phone cameras?
You people (probably the same Ghiz/Pepper freaks in every blog) comment that Mallory doesn't do anything and you never give him credit for doing any of the things he has done. Stop the sore loser behavior - IT'S OLD and TIRED. You guys act like you were really going to create housing policy during the fourm or that the media would even cover it. Do us all a favor and stay on your medication.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:21 PM

  • The Mayor and Council are not schoolchildren, with summer breaks where they just run out of town and drop everything--even things they've personally and publicly organized.

Anyway, how is it a "vacation" day if it is a day where the Mayor himself, as the elected leader of the City, organized and announced a public forum, that he personally was hosting?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:42 PM

  • I just hope somebody gets the Mayor out of office before 2009. God help us all if he stays there. When is everyone going to understand that this man has his own agenda and he doesn't care what ANY resident in the city has to say about anything. You can't even work with his office staff. I personally have not met a person who voted for Mallory say that they would vote the same way again if they had the opportunity to do it over. Get him out of office!
